Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance in the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live on Saturday night, turning up beside host Dakota Johnson as her “literal therapist,” according to Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. Variety noted that predictions of a Swift cameo this season had been circulating for some time, and the singer returned at the end of the episode to bring Johnson a birthday cake.

How the monologue played out

Johnson spent the first part of her opening routine joking about her love life. Variety reported that she mentioned “two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians,” a reference to Chris Martin and Role Model, and added, “Looking for a third.” She also described her new film Verity as a “psychosexual erotic thriller” and quipped, “So is dating musicians.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, she also took a swipe at Madame Web, saying that the last time she was on the show she was promoting that film and that she was “still promoting it” because the movie “hasn’t made any money yet.”

Then she told the audience she had very supportive friends who do not judge her, and introduced “my literal therapist.” Swift appeared on screen, which one fan on X described as a “Taylor Swift jump scare,” according to Variety. “I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift said. In Variety’s account, she went on to describe Johnson turning up at her house once a week with an empty bottle of wine, flopping on the couch and oversharing, while Swift occasionally replies, “Damn, that’s crazy.” Johnson’s retort, per The Hollywood Reporter, was “Is that not a therapist?”, and Swift supplied the punchline herself: “Then I give you Pedialyte and my security drives you home.”

The segment closed with Johnson claiming she was doing women “a public service” by dating musicians because she was saving them “a lot of money on Zoloft.” “So you’re welcome, America,” she said, adding thanks to England, parts of Ireland and Cleveland. Variety read the Cleveland line as a nod to Swift’s husband, Travis Kelce, which Johnson followed with “Allegedly.” The Hollywood Reporter recorded Swift adding a quick “Woo-woo!” Variety also reported that Swift squealed “It’s her birthday!” slightly ahead of schedule, since Johnson had said her birthday would arrive at midnight.

The link to “Patient Zero”

The cameo follows Johnson’s role in Swift’s music video for “Patient Zero.” Variety reported that Swift directed the video as well as appearing in it, and that it stars Johnson and Colin Farrell as an upper-class couple whose marriage seems to be in trouble. Swift plays a spectral figure who tries to warn Johnson that her wealthy husband may have more sinister intentions. The video premiered last Sunday night during the MTV Video Music Awards, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both said. Deadline framed the monologue appearance as payback for Johnson’s turn in the clip.

Swift also released “Patient Zero (Expanded Video)” on Saturday, Variety reported. The roughly eight-minute version adds making-of scenes to the original and is exclusive to Apple Music, with Swift linking to it through her Instagram Stories. “Patient Zero” is one of four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of her 2025 album that came out Sept. 25, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The Hollywood Reporter said “Cleveland,” another of the new tracks, is a song in which Swift sings about Kelce and their marriage.

Fans had to wait for the broadcast

Variety reported that the episode aired live in some markets, including New York, and on Peacock. NBC’s Los Angeles affiliate, along with other stations, delayed it until 11:41 p.m. ET (8:41 p.m. PT) because a USC–Washington college football game ran nine minutes into the 11 o’clock hour and the stations wanted to air a full half-hour of local news. Variety said it was the second week in a row that SNL started late in most markets because of a USC game. It was also the second time in a week that Swift fans had to turn to social media for news of her, the outlet added, because last Sunday’s tape-delayed VMAs telecast on CBS had also been pushed back after a game ran long.

Swift’s history with the show

Variety said Swift had not been in Studio 8H for some time. Her previous on-screen appearance was in October 2023, when she introduced musical guest Ice Spice, with whom she had collaborated on a remix. She hosted once, in 2009, and was also the musical guest on an earlier 2009 episode. She returned as musical guest in 2017, 2019 and 2021, and she made cameos in a 2014 monologue and a 2015 “Californians” sketch. Variety added that a Swift visit this season seemed likely after she appeared in an Easter egg-filled Law & Order: SVU sketch at the Emmys, in which a large Saturday Night Live emblem was pinned to a bulletin board behind her.

Because Turnstile was already confirmed as the musical guest, there was never any suggestion that Swift would perform, Variety noted. Johnson’s hosting history, per The Hollywood Reporter, runs from a February 2015 debut to a return in January 2024. She also appeared in the 40th anniversary special and made a cameo during Josh O’Connor’s hosting stint last December.

What is next for SNL

The Hollywood Reporter said Season 52 opened last week with New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson as host and Katseye as musical guest. Shane Gillis hosts on Oct. 10 with Rosalia as musical guest, and Obsession star Inde Navarrette makes her hosting debut on the Halloween episode with Gracie Abrams. Saturday’s cold open, The Hollywood Reporter added, imagined Republican figures filming midterm campaign ads, with Marcello Hernández as Marco Rubio, Mikey Day as Mitch McConnell, Jeremy Culhane as J.D. Vance and Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth.
