SpaceX is counting down to one of the most consequential Starship missions yet. Flight 13, targeted for 16 July from Starbase in South Texas, will try something no previous test has attempted. The giant rocket is due to release 20 real Starlink V3 satellites in space. Space.com reported the launch window opens at 6:45 p.m. EDT (2245 GMT) and runs for up to 90 minutes.

A rapid turnaround at Starbase

Preparations moved quickly in the final days. Space.com's live coverage noted that Super Heavy Booster 20 rolled back to Pad 2 on 15 July. Ship 40 followed the same route after sunset. Stacking both stages the day before a window opens has become routine for SpaceX, but the pace still stands out against the rest of the launch industry.

The company confirmed the mission profile on its official Flight 13 page. Spaceflight Now reported that the flight remains suborbital, like every Starship test so far. That choice keeps the vehicle on a predictable trajectory while engineers gather data on the upgraded hardware.

The first Starlink V3 payload

The headline objective comes after stage separation. Space.com reported that Starship will deploy 20 Starlink V3 satellites, the first time the vehicle has released this new generation of spacecraft. SpaceX says the V3 satellites aim to greatly expand the network's capacity and user speeds once they fly on operational missions.

These particular satellites will not join the constellation. Spaceflight Now reported they will deliberately reenter the atmosphere after the demonstration. Before that, each spacecraft is expected to extend its solar arrays and antennas. They will also attempt to connect with the wider Starlink network using high-capacity laser links.

Cameras watching the heat shield

Six of the satellites double as camera platforms. Space.com reported they will record live views of Starship and its heat shield, then beam the footage back to Earth for analysis. The thermal protection system remains one of the hardest engineering problems on the vehicle. Tiles have cracked, shed and burned through on earlier flights.

External imagery from free-flying satellites gives SpaceX a new diagnostic angle. Engineers have previously relied on onboard cameras and post-splashdown inspection of debris fields. Independent views of the ship during descent could show exactly when and where tiles fail.

Booster recovery moves offshore

Super Heavy has its own test card. Spaceflight Now reported the booster's primary objectives are a clean ascent, stage separation, a boostback burn and a landing burn at an offshore point in the Gulf. There will be no catch attempt at the launch tower this time. The offshore target lets SpaceX rehearse the full recovery sequence without risking pad infrastructure.

The upper stage has a parallel checklist. SpaceNews reported that Ship 40 will attempt a relight of a single Raptor engine while in space. In-space relight is essential for future deorbit burns, orbital refueling and any Mars-bound trajectory. The ship then aims for a controlled entry, descent and splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

Version 3 proves itself

Flight 13 is only the second outing for the Version 3 configuration. SpaceNews reported the mission profile closely mirrors Flight 12, which debuted the upgraded vehicle. Version 3 brings stretched propellant tanks, structural changes and improved Raptor engines. Repeating a profile lets engineers isolate variables rather than chase new failure modes on every flight.

The satellite deployment mechanism is the newest piece of hardware under scrutiny. Starship dispenses its payloads through a slot rather than a traditional fairing. Proving that system works with real satellites, not mass simulators, is the gate between test flights and revenue missions.

Why this flight matters beyond SpaceX

A successful deployment would move Starship measurably closer to operational status. Starlink V3 satellites are too large for the workhorse Falcon 9, so the constellation's next growth phase depends on Starship flying reliably. NASA is also watching closely. The agency's Artemis lunar landings depend on a Starship-derived lander and on orbital refueling that requires routine, frequent launches.

Competitors and regulators will study the outcome too. Every milestone Starship clears resets assumptions about launch pricing and satellite broadband capacity worldwide. If the window holds, viewers can watch the attempt live on SpaceX's webcast, which Space.com reported begins about 30 minutes before liftoff.
